Environmental Commitment

Industry Groups and Energy Efficiency

Meaningful metrics for energy efficiency in the data center are essential for best results in product development. But when it comes to IT equipment, multiple variables make it difficult to calculate the value derived from the energy put in. EMC is actively engaged in industry groups working to set standards that will direct product development across the industry, and shape the impact that IT will have on the environment.

Green Grid

This consortium of IT companies and professionals works to reduce the global power consumption of data centers. The Green Grid is developing platform-neutral standards, metrics, processes, and technologies to improve energy efficiency in the data center.

Information Technology Industry Council

The ITIC is an organization of the leading high-tech companies in the U.S. EMC chairs their High Tech Energy Policy committee, whose agenda includes: incentives for telecommuting; focusing government procurement power on energy efficient products; increasing federal funding for R&D on energy efficient IT; incentives for efficient data centers; and increasing funding for energy efficiency programs such as Energy Star.

Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA)

SNIA develops standards, drives best practices, and educates on storage issues. Their Green Storage Initiative focuses on data center energy use and energy efficient design and operation.

Tech CEO Council

This public policy organization of CEOs from leading IT companies is setting environmental goals for its members, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Climate Leaders participation, compliance with environmental standards and regulations, and creating metrics for energy efficient data centers.

Uptime Institute

The Uptime Institute is dedicated to helping companies prevent downtime in their data centers. Optimizing energy efficiency in the data center is a primary topic in their research. EMC is the only storage vendor certified by the Uptime Institute.
